DLNHS Annual Meeting featuring Frampton Tolbert speaking about “Queens Modern

Frampton Tolbert: an architectural historian whose focus is vernacular and regional modernism, focusing primarily on New York City. He has created Mid-Century Mundane and Queens Modern, both online databases, that examine this work. Queens Modern looks at Modernism in Queens County and delves into the careers of two dozen architects of regional prominence. Frampton is currently Deputy Director at the Center for Urban Pedagogy, an award-winning nonprofit, whose mission is to use the power of design and art to increase meaningful civic engagement. He was previously Deputy Director of the Historic Districts Council. He serves on the boards of Docomomo New York Tri-State, the Victorian Society in America, and the Society for Clinton Hill. He received his BA in Historic Preservation from the University of Mary Washington.

TOPIC/Queens Modern:

Modern architecture has gained increasing visibility through exhibitions, publications, preservation campaigns, and even television. However, the subset of locally and regionally significant mid-century architecture has been less explored, yet is potentially a rich historic resource. In New York City, while Manhattan includes a wealth of high-profile modern buildings by nationally and internationally significant architects, the other boroughs remain undiscovered. Of all the boroughs, Queens showcases one of the most significant collections of regional mid-century design but is largely unheralded. This project seeks to remedy the lack of knowledge about Queens Modernism and promote its history and significance.
