SUMMARY:June 1\, 2014 Beech Tree Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:2009 DLNHS 20th Anniversary Fundraiser Update: Station Beech Tree \nFive years ago\, our iconic Beech Tree at the Douglaston Train Station\, was pronounced to be in steep decline (perhaps dead within a year) by the New York City Parks Department Arborist and the late Thomas Gaines\, local landscape architect/horticulturist. In the five years before\, more than half of the tree had died and it was dying rapidly. Beech trees are VERY sensitive\, and typically once branches die back\, it’s only a matter of time. \nThe Douglaston and Little Neck Historical Society decided to be PROACTIVE rather than wait until the Beech Tree was dead and scramble for a solution\, or worse\, have the City have its own solution\, which might have included paving over the island. \nOur 2009 20th Anniversary Gala dedicated funds raised to the purchase\, removal\, planting\, irrigation and care of a replacement Beech Tree for the Station. These funds have been set aside by the DLNHS and are inviolate\, they cannot be used for anything else. \nThe Station Beech Tree was planted in the 1880s and is the scion of the original Weeping Beech brought to Flushing in the 1850’s by Samuel Parsons\, nurseryman\, from Europe. All Weeping Beeches in the United States are descended from this original cutting brought from an estate in Belgium. \nA 20-foot Beech Tree to replace the Station Beech Tree was purchased by and shipped to New York from Ohio (nationwide search) after the fundraiser by Joe Pizzirusso of New Creations Landscapes. Mr. Pizzirusso did not ask us for money to pay for this\, instead generously offering to hold the tree and care for it in his nursery in Melville\, Long Island\, where it remains as of 2014\, and is growing nicely. Beech trees are a very slow growing tree. When the time comes\, he will bring it to Douglaston and plant it. Mr. Pizziruso donated his services in procuring it\, caring for it (and eventually) planting it as a gift to Douglaston\, as his personal thank you to this community\, where he has worked with many clients over the past 20 years. \nThe Parks Department has maintained the tree since the 2009 prediction of demise\, pruning it promptly whenever there is die back\, and watering it in the intense heat of summer (lack of irrigation is another issue for its survival)\, and so far it has worked\, staving off imminent death.

SUMMARY:Oct 18\, Sesquicentennial Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tours Douglaston Sesquicentennial\n1853 – 2003 From 19th Century Farm to 21st Century Suburbia\,”The Hill” Celebrates 150 Years\nCome celebrate with us on October 18th\nHouse Tours ~ Architectural Tours ~ Udall’s Cove Tour ~ Reception\nEvent Details \nDouglaston Hill is marking the 150th anniversary of its transition from rural farmland to suburban neighborhood. On July 23rd\, 1853\, the “Map of the Village of Marathon (now Douglaston Hill)\, at the head of Little Neck Bay” was filed\, thus forever transforming Jeremiah Lambertson’s farm into what would eventually become\, and still is to this day\, a classic example of a “Garden Suburb.” Douglaston Hill is included in the National Register of Historic Places and the New York State Register of Historic places.\n“The filing of this map is historically significant not only to Douglaston but to all of New York City.” According to William Sievers\, Vice President of the Douglaston / Little Neck Historical Society.\n“Lambertson’s creation of large 200 ft. by 200 ft. lots laid out in an urban grid represents the genesis of a New York City suburb. The neighborhood is still largely intact\, allowing people today to see first-hand how suburban life in the city evolved.”\n“When you walk through Douglaston Hill you feel like you have traveled back in time.” notes Kevin Wolfe\, Architectural Historian\, DLNHS Founder and past President. \n\nDouglaston Hill is bounded on the south by Northern Boulevard\, on the west by Douglaston Parkway\, on the north by the Long Island Railroad’s Port Washington Line and on the east by Udall’s Cove Upland Ravine Park. While the land was subdivided and sold 150 years ago\, the area behind Zion Church was not developed in earnest until the late 1800s to early 1900s\, with most lots built upon by the 1930s. Architectural styles ranging from late nineteenth and early twentieth century Colonial Revival\, Queen Anne\, Shingle Style\, Tudor Revival\, Prairie Style and American Craftsman designs still exist throughout “the Hill.” \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Douglaston Little Neck Historical Society will be celebrating Douglaston Hill’s sesquicentennial with a series of events culminating on October 18th with tours of area homes\, the Zion Churchyard\, and Udall’s Cove Upland Ravine all of which will be followed by a reception at the Community Church of Douglaston. Here’s a schedule of the planned events:\n10:30am – 2pm Check in at Zion Church Parish Hall  (44th Avenue). All tickets including house tour brochure will be available that morning\n11am Walking Tour: Upland Udalls Cove Ravine\n11am – 4pm Zion Churchyard Tour (self-guided)\n12 noon – 1:15pm Historical/Architectural Tour of Douglaston Hill\n1pm – 4pm House Tour: Douglaston Hill Homes\n2:30pm – 5pm Reception at “The Attic” cafe lounge (Reserve early. Space limited.) \nDouglaston Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places and New York State Register of Historic Places on September 12th\, 2000. The community applied for New York City Landmark Designation several years ago and their application is currently under review by the Landmark Preservation Commission. The Douglaston Little Neck Historical Society\, a not-for-profit 501c(3) corporation\, was founded in 1989. The DLNHS’s mission is to encourage historic research\, preserve and protect historic buildings and sites\, collect and preserve historic records and relics\, and promote public knowledge of\, and interest in local and national history. The society receives support from the Preservation League of New York State\, New York Council on the Arts Grant Program and the Historic District Council of New York. \nFor more information about the historic society:\nDouglaston Little Neck Historic Society\n328 Manor Road\nDouglaston\, NY 11363 \ninfo@dlnhs.org \n
